No Ground To Stand On With a strong emphasis on nature and my heritage, the work I create is focused around these themes. The simple beauty of a knot found in wood, or the strange shapes roots form lead me into a play world of my own imagination. Hearing Native American stories and myths growing up had an impact on this creativity, as did the suffrage I learned they endured. I can't imagine being ripped from my house and land, but I can relate to losing friends, loved ones, and feeling powerless to circumstances beyond my control. I try to express these feelings through color, image, and idea. The figures wrapped in blankets represent the deaths that occurred from biological warfare. Millions of Native Americans were killed from smallpox's and the laced blankets were provided by the United States military. The reality of a situation or event can weigh down the spirit, and as I continued on this theme, the idea evolved into how humanity suffers as a common whole. Everyone has issues and problems that can make them feel helpless with no ground to stand on. The hovering figures represent a kind of resurrection as well, a kind of rising above and healing yourself.
